SCHOOL pupils went bonkers for conkers – and they had a great time.
Nearly 50 youngsters took part in the conkers contest at Cliddesden Primary School in a bid to claim the title of the conker king or queen.
Pupils had five strikes in the knockout contest, with those gaining the most hits going through to the next round.
John Stapleton, a teacher at the school, in Cliddesden, said: “We have played with safety goggles in the past and that’s still an option, but we don’t insist on it because we don’t play to destruction so there aren’t bits of conker flying through the air.”
Year 6 pupil Will Macdonald was declared the eventual winner of the competition, with seven-year-old pupil Sean Emery runner-up.
Mr Stapleton said: “All the pupils choose their own conker and there’s much debate over which are best – old or fresh. They all thoroughly enjoyed it.”
