A CAMPAIGN has been launched to warn teenage pedestrians about the dangers of being distracted while using mobile phones or listening to music.
Hampshire County Council’s road safety team has come up with the message “Don’t lose your senses at the roadside’ to encourage young people to be aware of being distracted by music or a mobile.
The message will be used on posters around the county inside buses and at train stations.
Councillor Mel Kendal, executive member for environment, said: “Teenage pedestrians are most at risk on the roads as they are usually travelling independent of parents and with their peers who are more likely to distract them from giving enough attention to the road.
“We hope some of these advertising campaigns, designed to highlight the possible dangers and consequences of being distracted on the roads register with this age group, and remind young people to be careful when near roads.”
Nationally, the highest number of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries amongst 12 to 16-year-olds happen during the autumn and winter, when it becomes dark earlier and road conditions may be bad.
