Learning about Sir's homeland

A CAMEROON-born geography teacher taught school pupils about his homeland as part of an African-themed day.

Primary schoolchildren were invited to Cranbourne Business and Enterprise college in Wessex Way, Basingstoke, where they learned traditional African dancing from teacher Augustine Gahdinga – known to pupils as Mr G.

The visit was part of the secondary school’s programme of inviting children from primary schools in the catchment area to look around what will be their new school in September.

The children from Manor Field Junior School, in Brighton Way, and Four Lanes Community Junior School in Hanmore Road, Chineham, spent the day learning about African culture.

Year Five pupils from Cranbourne also learned about the continent and made African masks.

Betty Elkins, head teacher at Cranbourne, said: “This was a really exciting way for us all to end our school year. It was lovely to see so many children from our primary schools taking part in activities and learning about the wonderful opportunities waiting for them at Cranbourne.

“It’s a fantastic way to open young minds’ to the wider world by making the most of Mr G’s African roots.”
