Pupils get a taste of the world's culture

STUDENTS got their tongues round foreign vowels, consonants and food at a special event in Basingstoke.

Brighton Hill Community College gave its students the opportunity to experience different cultures and learn a new language with its first "Get a life, Learn a language" session.

Students were given the chance to take part in a variety of different language tasks, from Welsh conversation to French language games.

Instead of their usual packed lunches there was the chance to taste a variety of European cuisine. La Tasca generously provided Spanish tapas and French and German food was also on offer.

Alchemy Dance Company provided the entertainment with a Salsa dancing demonstration and class.

The event was organised by Basingstoke Consortium as part of a work-related learning programme it provides to all secondary schools in Basingstoke.

Sue Riley, director of Basingstoke Consortium, said: "Giving students the opportunity to learn about different cultures in a practical, hands-on way is important, as it brings to life the reality of studying a language."

Sophie Hallum-Barnard, director of modern and foreign languages designate at Brighton Hill Community College, said: "As a specialist language college we feel that it is vital that students at Brighton Hill have an awareness and appreciation of the many cultures and languages that exist around the world.

"This day is another way for us to further our students' inter-cultural awareness before they begin their core language study in Year 9."
