An angel in LA

| Ruth Dawson is off to Los Angeles |
A NURSE is planning an American adventure to give a helping hand to disadvantaged children and young people.
Ruth Dawson, 24, who is a staff nurse on ward C2 at Basingstoke hospital, will spend three months working at a church in downtown Los Angeles, in the United States, carrying out youth work.
Miss Dawson, of Hampshire Close, Buckskin, Basingstoke, is a member of the Town Centre Community Church, which meets in the Sarum Hill Centre, Sarum Hill, and found out about the placement through the Oasis trust - a charity which aims to confront injustice in practical ways.
She said: "I'll be working with young people and children who don't really go to school, by trying to get them involved in an educational project. I will also be supporting the Stop the Traffik' campaign, to prevent human trafficking."
She added: "I have always been interested in giving my time to do something like this and I hope it will help me to develop my social care skills."
Bosses at the hospital have allowed Miss Dawson, who has worked there for two-and-a-half years, to take the time off as unpaid leave.
She will leave for Los Angeles on May 12 and is trying to raise £2,900 to fund the trip. She has raised £400 so far and has organised a fund-raising three-course meal with live music and a presentation about the project.
The event, on the evening of April 5, will be held at the Sarum Hill Centre and tickets cost £10. To buy a ticket, or to sponsor Miss Dawson, call 07896 513119.
