JONATHAN Jones entertained members of Oakley and Deane WI at their December meeting with a wonderful rendition in character of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It certainly bought the tale to life and kept members enthralled. There was also an exhibition during the evening of various copies of the same story.

PROFESSOR Sir Barry Cunliffe was the guest speaker at the society’s November meeting. His chosen subject – ‘Celts from the West’ – provided a large audience with a fascinating summary of the changes that have taken place over the past half century in our understanding of the origins of the pre-literate societies of Iron Age Western Europe. These people or peoples, called ‘Celtic’ by classical historians, were often recorded as hostile towards Mediterranean civilisations – a notable event being the sack of Rome in 390 BC. Contemporary sources never associate them exclusively with one homeland but described them as living in tribal territories across Western Europe. Why they should have apparently become aggressive in the latter part of the first millennium BC will never be satisfactorily explained in the absence of indigenous written sources but it seems most likely that the upheavals were caused by population pressures.

Oakley and Deane WI SAFE winter driving was the subject of a talk given to members of Oakley and Deane WI by Geoff Banks at their October meeting, when they were given some valuable information and tips, so should be well prepared should we have another winter of bad weather.

After the excitement of our 40th anniversary celebrations (The Gazette, October 21) the society’s winter lecture programme continued in October with a presentation on ‘Recent Work at Marden Henge and the Neolithic Building’ by Dr Jim Leary, of English Heritage.

THE society resumed its winter lecture programme following the summer break with a talk by Andrew Manning, of Wessex Archaeology, on recent finds at Avon Fields housing development at the former MOD Durrington site on Salisbury Plain. Excavations within the north-west corner of the modern village of Durrington not far from the huge Neolithic henge known as Durrington Walls and Woodhenge, both of which are more than 4,500 years old, have revealed previously unknown Neolithic monuments, a surprisingly large Iron Age/Romano British settlement containing many archaeological features such as granaries, storage pits, a corn-drying kiln and a Roman road. A couple of sink holes that were discovered hint at something sacred or special about this site as there was evidence for a 'pavement' of flint knapping debris, including some finely worked flints, around the perimeters of the holes. The settlement appears to have been surrounded by an enormous ditch over 6m in width and up to 4m in depth. Excavations will continue next summer.

JULY started with an evening at the Loddon Bowls Club, where our federation held the annual skittles evening with competition between the various guilds – a very enjoyable evening which included a supper.

THE April lecture entitled “A Traitor’s Death: The Mystery of the Hanged Drawn and Quartered Man from Hulton Abbey, Staffordshire” given by Mary Lewis, of Reading University, provided an attentive audience with an opportunity to learn something of the study of human skeletal remains and of the grisly medieval punishment of being hung, drawn and quartered.

THERE was much foot tapping at the 93rd birthday meeting of the group in April, when members were entertained by Julie Horton, a jazz singer, and her accompanying pianist, Chris Newman, as they sang and played a selection of all-time jazz classics.
