AT THE first meeting of 2011, members enjoyed a most delightful slide show with appropriate background music presented by Wyn Voysey.

There were five short shows, the first being entitled Memories, with pictures of wartime Britain, and this was followed by one about Ellen Terry, showing her house just as she left it in the 1920s with a lot of her dresses and memorabilia on show. Devon, Painshill Park, The Vyne and Hilliers Gardens were featured in the last three with some unusual views in Devon and beautiful autumn colours in the others.

Details were given of forthcoming events including a lunch at Longbridge Mill, a visit to Lechlade and Burscot Park in Faringdon and the spring council meeting in Portsmouth.

The suggested resolutions were discussed and by a unanimous decision it was decided to support the one to ensure that planning permission is not granted for mega farms, particularly for large animals such as pigs and cows.

An interesting and varied programme is arranged for 2011 and new members and guests will be made most welcome. The annual fee of £30 covers 12 monthly meetings with refreshments with members also being able to join the various sub-groups including craft, bridge and scrabble which meet regularly between meetings.

Subjects for future meetings are: February – Yoga and Swishing Party, March – Basingstoke Heritage, April – The Birth of Jazz, May – Painting Through My Life, June – Scrapbooking, July – House of Colour, August – Dabble Evening, September – Thrift to Therapy, October – Bringing the Stone Age to Life, November – Winter Driving, December – A Christmas Carol.

Oakley and Deane WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Andover Road Village Hall from 7.30pm to 9.45pm.
