BASINGSTOKE Writers Circle’s most honoured guest this month was Dave Holby, or “Dave the rower,” as he is affectionately known to his many fans.
Dave is most often seen at The Malls on his static rowing machine counting down the, more than, 25,000-mile, virtual distance around the equator. Crazy, yes some may say! His three-year arduous journey (which includes several Guinness World Record attempts) is expected to reach dry dock in Basingstoke on December 18. The circle presented him with a £200 cheque towards the charity, Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research. Dave left with a doggy-bag, for he needs all the sustenance he can get, having to consume 7,000 calories per day.
Other special guests at the meeting were Joy Krauklis, a founder member of the circle spanning 22 years, Angela Hurley, secretary of the writing section of Basingstoke Music and Arts Festival, and Eileen Poulter, illustrator for the circle.
