MR AND Dr Moss gave a talk to Oakley and Deane WI at their February meeting entitled “Fun in Foreign Fields”.

Mr Moss was an eye surgeon and Dr Moss a GP and, upon their retirement, they embarked on a venture to provide eye surgery and restore sight to the many disabled and disadvantaged people living in bad conditions in poorer parts of the world.

They had to work in quite primitive conditions but the people they helped were so appreciative of their work, and this was clearly shown in the slides they presented. They now liaise with a charity called Impact which has an international programme to prevent and alleviate needless disability Specially-adapted trains, boats and buses mean medical help can reach the most remote villages, and help is also given to encourage people to set up home gardens to provide fresh and nutritious food which can improve their health.

Details were given of forthcoming events including a lunch at Test Valley Golf Club, a jumble sale on March 27, and the group spring meeting in Portsmouth, when there will be a talk entitled “Cantering through a Funny Life.” The guest speaker will be Sir Bernard Ingham.

As the January meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather, belated reports were given on the various activities in December including the Christmas Celebration and a meal at The Hogget pub.

At the March meeting, Jonathan Jones will be talking about “Kipling, His Life and His Poetry” and there will also be a Fair Trade stall.

Oakley and Deane WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month, at the village hall, in Andover Road, from 7.30pm to 9.45pm. Any guests will be made most welcome.
