THE severe weather conditions, prevailing during the earlier part of January, necessitated cancellation of the society’s monthly meeting scheduled for January 14 and the consequent postponement of the lecture by Professor Barbara Yorke on the subject of “Anglo-Saxon Northumberland” to a future date.
Members have, however, continued to provide volunteer service on the Hampshire Victoria County History project at Chute House, Basingstoke, about which Jean Morrin will be giving a talk to the Friends of The Willis Museum at the museum on May 20, at 7.30pm. Plans for a members’ trip to Malta, which will take place from March 4 to 11, have now reached an advanced stage and further tasks are underway to enable members to participate in field walking, woodland survey and excavations at the Bronze Age site at Quarley Down, Cholderton, during the next few months.
Sales of Happy Christmas, Basingstoke! have been very encouraging and the Basingstoke Talking History team are continuing to record interviews for the next book for which it would welcome memories about the Co-op in Basingstoke at the original Essex Road site, the New Street/Winchester Street site or at King's Road or Soper Grove.
The next meeting will take place at Church Cottage at 7.30pm on Thursday, February 11, when Richard Hobbs, of the British Museum, will make “Treasures in Late Roman Britain” the subject of his lecture. Knowledge of conditions in this critical period of British history is far from complete and it is of particular interest that Dr Hobbs has recently worked on the re-examination of the Mildenhall Treasure held at the museum.
This remarkable find by a Suffolk ploughman in 1942 has influenced the thinking of archaeologists and historians of the late Roman period for many years, yet the discovery and origin of the treasure both remain the subject of controversy.
Non-members are welcome to attend – admission charge £2.
