FUN run: Amid sunshine and heavy showers, more than 200 runners took part.

OPEN garden at West Silchester Hall: Sunday and Monday (May 24 and 25) from 2pm to 5.30pm.

Entrance costs £3 for adults and children free. Plants for sale also.

SILCHESTER Diary: Is now in operation. Contact David Penney at david silchester@btinternet.com with your dates as soon as possible to avoid any clashes. What a good idea this is.

FETE: On the common on June 13 from 1pm, with all the usual sideshows, stalls and games. Stallholders are looking for items to sell, contact Vanessa on 0118 9701711 if you can donate or help on the day.

CRICKET: Our team are home on Saturday, visitors are Holybourne II. The match is sponsored by WestBuild Homes Ltd and will start at 2pm.

ASCENSION Day: There will be a service in the parish church tonight at 7.30pm and on Sunday we welcome Bishop Trevor Willmott, who will lead the Confirmation Service at 10am.

SILCHESTER Music Festival: Book the date, June 27, offers of help and sponsorship, contact Sonia, 07880700812.

RETIREMENT: Valerie Hyde retires as churchwarden this week. She has served St Mary’s, Silchester for 12 years. Last Sunday, she was presented with a bouquet and toasted with wine after the morning service. Valerie will continue her work for the church by still retaining some of her jobs. Richard Rand will now join Eddie Culbert as the two wardens.
