DEBUT performance for The Belles of St Martin’s: Who joined more than 400 voices in the Basingstoke Festival of Choirs at The Anvil last Sunday evening, watched by countless friends and family in a capacity audience that heard the choirs sing a wide range of songs to commemorate ‘A Century of War and Peace’.
Songs, music and readings from wartime diaries created an atmosphere that evoked the tragedy of war, with renditions of Dies Irae from Verdi’s Requiem, Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan and led towards Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace and finally The World in Union.
Community singing was an essential part of keeping up morale in wartime and the audience didn’t disappoint, participating in favourites such as Keep the Home Fires Burning and It’s A Long Way to Tipperary.
LIVE dance: Performances of Live to Dance last Friday and Saturday at The Haymarket were a resounding success, with Ellisfield’s Dariah Cooke dancing a solo piece.
VINTAGE Tea Party in aid of Naomi House: 1pm-5pm on Monday, at Suzanne’s house, Tanglewood, Green Lane, Ellisfield.
