ENGLISH and proud of it: Did you hear the Rotherwick church bells on an unusual midweek ring two weeks ago?

Not only were Captain Alan Giles and his fellow campanologists marking St George’s Day in style, but also celebrating the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. This Saturday, we welcome the Godalming Ringers to swing on our sallies.

LEST we forget: A special dedication service will be taking place down by the railway bridge, in Crown Lane, this Sunday, at 12.30pm.

In August 1940 six young men aged 20- 23 lost their lives there trying to defuse a German bomb. This almost-forgotten feat of heroism is being honoured with a memorial ceremony attended by civic and military representatives, including a piper, a bugler and a six-rifle honour guard. Further information from Captain Mike Authers on 01264 553636.

WATCH out: For the 10-mile runners coming up The Street, also Sunday, at about 11am, in the long leg of the Hook Fun Run. Please drive carefully around them – they’ll be going as fast as they can!
