It was the 94th birthday of Oakley and Deane WI in April so business was kept to a minimum and then Malcom Calvert spoke about and demonstrated the art of Tai Chi and Chi Kung which are Chinese martial arts. These arts are practised for defence training and also have many health benefits. Studies have shown that regular practice can greatly reduce pain and overall physical and mental health in people over 60 with problems such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, bad circulation, blood pressure, chest/lung complaints and some chronic illnesses. He demonstrated hand routines and focusing on these movements can bring about mental calm. Members then did some of these exercises and felt quite relaxed afterwards.

Following a birthday toast to the WI a buffet supper prepared by the committee was enjoyed. There was a competition during the evening for a hand knitted scarf which produced some lovely entries and a draw was made for a bursary for two members to go on a residential course at Denman College. Denman College which is near Abingdon was established in 1948 offers members the opportunity to attend some of the many varied and extensive residential courses available as well as days schools and non residential events. The college was named after Lady Denman, who was the first chairman of the NFWI.

There are several events arranged for the next month including afternoon tea at Peponis, near Farnham, a walk for ACWW and the usual bridge, scrabble and craft sessions.

The May meeting is the annual meeting when the committee for the following year will be elected and there will be a Swishing Party at which members can bring items to sell, mainly clothing and accessories. The competition for the evening will be a red, white and blue flower arrangement in a teacup.
