Oakley and Deane WI SAFE winter driving was the subject of a talk given to members of Oakley and Deane WI by Geoff Banks at their October meeting, when they were given some valuable information and tips, so should be well prepared should we have another winter of bad weather.

Some of the advice given was that if driving in deep snow it is advisable to use a high gear and if possible drive in soft snow rather than hard. It is also advisable before any journey to check your petrol, oil, wheels engine and tyres and in the bad weather put in your car a blanket, a warm coat, a vacuum flask with hot drinks, a snow shovel and torch and also whilst driving anticipate what is ahead. They were also told how to cope with a skid and ended his talk with a quiz, the results of which made many realise that they had a lot to learn about cars and driving but will take it all on board to ensure they are safe on the road particularly in bad weather.

During the evening, a fish and chip supper was enjoyed by all and because of this and the most interesting talk business was kept to a minimum.

Recent events included a trip to Oxford with a visit to the Ashmoleum museum, which was really interesting, and in the afternoon, members were able to explore Oxford at their leisure, many visiting the various universities and grounds or taking in local walks and even a bit of retail therapy.

The autumn council meeting took place recently at The Anvil, when the guest speaker was Jenny Bond, who entertained the audience with many anecdotes and tales about her experience as a journalist and royal correspondent.

Forthcoming event are mostly aimed with Christmas in mind, there being a Christmas lunch at the The Red House, in Whitchurch, the group Christmas celebration at the Baptist Church, in Brighton Hill, and at the December meeting of Oakley and Deane WI. “A Christmas Carol” is the subject of Jonathon Jones’s presentation, to which any visitors will be made most welcome.
