Bassett couple woken by thief driving away their £50,000 car

A COUPLE were burgled while they slept and woke to hear their £50,000 car being driven off their driveway.

It’s the latest in a series of high performance vehicles being stolen from outside homes across Southampton in recent weeks.

Now police are warning residents with expensive cars to be vigilant and take extra security steps to protect them.

The theft happened at 4.50am on Friday when the young couple, who live in Bassett with their children aged three and five who were asleep in bed, were disturbed by noises.

They looked out of the window to see the burglar driving off in their BMW X6, which cost in the region of £50,000.

The thief was well built and wearing a grey hooded top with the hood up hiding his identity.

He had forced entry into their home and grabbed the keys after searching around briefly in the downstairs of their house.

It’s the sixth case of its kind in the city in recent weeks, with homes across Upper Shirley and Bassett being targeted.

Detectives in the priority crime unit are now investigating and are urging people to take simple steps to prevent the car thefts.

They include using a second vehicle, if they own one, to block the high performance car in the driveway. Owners should also make sure their properties are secured at night and put car keys in a safe place and out of sight.

In some of the other cases the thieves have reached through letterboxes to snatch the keys as well as carrying out break-ins into others.

Among the cars stolen have been a BMW X5, a BMW 320, a Mercedes E320 and a Ford Focus. Anyone with information is asked to contact the priority crime unit at Hulse Road on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

you'd think anyone who had that kind of cash to waste on a vehicle to pose with' would invest in a decent house alarm and tracker system in the vehicle

Sounds to me Jamesy like you're somewhat jealous of them having a decent car, also why is this particular vehicle a "posers" car as you have written, perhaps this couple thought they'd buy something safe for their children to travel in you dope!
If you'd bothered to read what was said properly you'd see there was no mention of a "Tracker" system, it doesn't mean there wasn't one!
By the way, do you yourself have a decent alarm system for your house?
What a world we live in when we get our homes broken into and our car stolen from our drive only for some idiot to pour scorn and critisism on us as if its our fault!

Under what circumstances do you call a Ford Focus high performance vehicle?

How about publishing a daily list of types, colour and registration so that we can keep a look out for stolen cars?

You'll struggle to find a car for under £55k which beats the ST off the line.

I expect you think your Rover 75 will give it a run for its money though, don't you!

This doesn't include 20 year old Skyline's with cherry bomb exhausts. I meant new cars...

The Focus RS for a start.

under 55K would incude a number of RS Audi's, AMG Mercs and M series BMW's. Evo 10's. You can get a second hand AM V8 Vantage for that aswell nowadays.

Attempting to think laterally -
Maybe the Ford Focus WAS the cheap second vehicle used to block the High Performance car in the driveway.
As the thief could steal the decent car then he just took what was available.

Well, once you start adding exclusions, it's easy to be right. "I meant cars which are slower than the Focus ST, not ones which are faster". You Ford fanboys can be so precious about your blue ovals sometimes!

Maybe if some of us thought positive we could clamp down on these thefts rather than argueing over what car is worth more. Surely theft is theft regardless of the cost.

Maybe we should be mentioning the names of the thieves rather than what car is faster or more expensive, afterall who cares if you have a bigger exhaust than mine.

Get a grip and report the thieving chavs rather than go on about my car is better than yours.

Impreza Cosworth, and Evo X would both make a focus ST look like the luke warm slow hatch that it is and can both be had for less than 55K. In fact the Impreza Cosworth will make a monkey out of lots of cars which cost over 100K

The Echo forgot a Blue Audi from Lordshill... read my replay to the police a few weeks ago...
"Well Chief Superintendent, I bet you dont even read this, but here goes.

Less than 2 weeks ago, i phoned 999 because a group of 4-5 yobs attacked a man in daylight, your 999 responce was "well if anyone else reports it, we might send a car, but as no-one else has called, we'll wait and do nothing"

2-3 days ago, you had officers calling door to door, and at my home, because a car was stolen out side the very house where this attack was taking place less than 2 weeks ago.

your door to door asked if we heard shouting at 4:30am i heard shouting and seen stones being thrown at a man at Noon. how come a stolen car is worth more than a mans life to the police? you send officers door to door for a car, but wont send a car to see of an attacked man is ok?

i know now that i will just be a murder statistic in this town. but as 163 people like me where murdered last year, just for being ourselves, then the Police have lost my respect."

I'm sorry but I find it really hard to take you seriously. Your comment about leaving other cars behind and looking at them in your rear-view mirror was just comical.

I'm sure your gt4 is really fast and makes you feel like a big boy, but it fails to interest me in the slightest.
