SHOPPERS pledging to do their bit for the environment received a free light bulb from a Basingstoke supermarket.
Staff at Sainsbury's, in Hatch Warren Retail Park, got involved with the company's bright idea to mark last month's national energy-saving week.
Nationally, the supermarket chain handed out one million bulbs, and in Basingstoke, more than 5,000 were offered to shoppers pledging to take actions such as unplugging phone chargers not in use and hanging clothes to dry rather than using a tumble dryer.
Gabrielle Durrant, 67, of Lavender Road, Kempshott, Basingstoke, was one of those to make the pledge.
She said: "I think it's a great idea. I wish all the other shops did it - I'd be able to replace all my bulbs."
Jamieson Swallow, regional public relations ambassador for Sainsbury's, said the Hatch Warren store had just been refitted with energy-saving lighting.
"Sainsbury's is trying to lead by example," he added.
