Village's salsa classes are a smash hit

A NEW business called Salsa Y Sol, meaning Salsa and Sun, is causing a stir in a north Hampshire village.

Run by mother-of-three Silvia Gill and London IT consultant Max Guadagnino, the classes have started at Preston Candover Village Hall.

Austrian-born Silvia – who besides helping to run the business, also teach es French and German – teamed up with Max, who hails from Italy.

She said: “It all started with the idea of trying to breathe life into the coun tryside and show people how much fun salsa is, without anyone having to trav el too far.”

Silvia said that people have taken to the classes with great relish, starting from when the business held its inau gural salsa party.

She said: “We were really surprised at the salsa party that we had 83 people in our village hall – we were inundat ed.

“In the meantime, we have settled down to about 50 every week.”

The classes, which are held every Tuesday evening, are proving to be such a success that Salsa Y Sol is set to expand to Winchester.

The classes start at 8pm for begin ners, then an improvers class is held followed by social dancing until 11pm.

“That’s when we dim the lights and enjoy a party atmosphere,” said Silvia, who believes that Salsa Y Sol offers something different.

She said: “Our angle is to say ‘come to the beautiful Candover Valley and enjoy salsa classes here’. I think where we are slightly different is that our main aim is to get people to dance socially as quickly as possible. We want people to enjoy the dancing.”
