A HARDWORKING hotel apprentice who consistently strived to improve his skills and take on more responsibility has earned the title Employee of the Year.

James Clifford, who joined Tylney Hall Hotel in October 2011 after spending a year at Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) on a Level 1 NVQ Plumbing course, won the accolade that was open to all members of staff at the up market country hotel in Rotherwick.

The 21-year-old has since completed a two-year Maintenance Operations Level 2 apprenticeship by attending BCoT one day a week, and is currently part way through a Painting and Decorating NVQ Level 2.

He hopes to complete this in one year, rather than the usual two.

Paul Watson, maintenance manager at Tylney Hall, described James as “a shining example of a person who demonstrates a willingness and determination to better himself”.

He added: “It also confirms Tylney Hall’s commitment to the advancement of its staff.

“I’ve seen James grow from a shy lad in his first days at work to a well thought of member of the hotel team.

“His confidence has grown to such an extent that on occasions he now works extra shifts serving guests in our lounges. This is something that would have been a long way out of James’ comfort zone not so long ago.”

Delighted to receive the award, James said: “Working at Tylney Hall has given me real confidence in my abilities. When I started I was quiet and had fairly limited skills.

“The team has helped me to develop my knowledge and understanding of the job and given me responsibilities which I really enjoy.”

James also impressed BCoT principal Anthony Bravo, who awarded him with a certificate for his outstanding contribution to Tylney Hall, at the college's recent National Apprenticeship Week event.
