TEENTECH Hampshire is set to return to Basingstoke this summer for the fourth year running.

The event, which aims to inspire teenagers to consider careers in science, technology and engineering, will run again at The Hampshire Court Hotel on June 11, and will draw in 300 students from across the county.

More than 120 leading scientists, engineers and technologists from global, regional and start-up companies will bring leading edge technology to show young people how they can be part of this world.

From robotics to broadcast technology, precision engineering to world class scientific research, the event will showcase the range of opportunities in a fast changing career landscape.

The day is being organised by education charity Basingstoke Consortium which has teamed up with TeenTech CIC – community interest company – headed by BBC TV’s Bang Goes the Theory reporter Maggie Philbin.

The former Tomorrow’s World presenter said: “We’re delighted to be partnering Basingstoke Consortium for a fourth year in Basingstoke, and it’s been great to see the initiative go from strength to strength in the region.

“The event day is a catalyst and we are now seeing more and more schools running TeenTech Award projects with their students, inspired by the companies and technology they have encountered at TeenTech Hampshire.

“Feedback from the day constantly shows how impressed companies are with the potential shown by teenagers, and as a region we have to make sure we make the very best use of the talent in our classrooms.”

This year’s regional sponsors for the event are AWE, Hampshire County Council, Sony Europe and The University of Winchester.

Sue Riley, chief executive officer of Basingstoke Consortium, said: “Positive role models who work in industry are best equipped to inspire young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths. This is why TeenTech is such a wonderful opportunity for local schools.

“Hands-on activities not only help to bring learning to life for students, but help teachers inject reality into future lessons. The consortium is hugely proud to be part of TeenTech.”

Companies already confirmed to support the event include Air Products, De La Rue, Fujitsu, Laleham Health & Beauty, ICE and Visa.

Sue added: “Students attending the event will have the chance to take part in a wide range of exciting challenges, many of which will include interactive prizes.

“Sony Europe has announced that winners of its challenge will spend a day at Pinewood Studios to take part in its Script to Screen film course. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
