Poch wants to stay

Mauricio Pochettino is adamant he sees his future in the Premier League.

Pochettino’s contract situation continues to dominate his weekly press conferences as the season comes towards a close, with the Saints manager having just one further year remaining on his current deal.

He also continues to be linked with big jobs across Europe on an almost daily basis, but wants to stay in England – though he admits “all possibilities are open”.

“Yes, yes, yes. I would like to be in the Premier League, it is the best league in the world, and I’d like to be here as long as I can,” he said yesterday.

The strongest link in recent days has been with Tottenham, who are reportedly set to ditch Tim Sherwood in the summer.

Even though Pochettino has twice lost to Sherwood’s Spurs in 2013/14, sources close to the north London club remain convinced he is still in the frame if Sherwood leaves.

“In football I am very much accustomed to living with these rumours,” he said.

“I have been living with and hearing these rumours all my life, firstly as a player and then as a manager,” reflected Pochettino.

“I am just calm. I am not reacting to these rumours.

“My job ahead is these last five games of the season with Southampton to try and get as many points as we can.

“I have already said I don’t talk about rumours.

“Tottenham still have a manager, I still have one more year on my contract.

“I don’t talk about rumours and I’m focussed on this job.” Pochettino, below, has repeatedly said that his situation will be discussed in the summer, but there has been no definitive statement as to the desired outcome.

“I said back in January that at the end of the season I will be speaking to the club. The possibilities are open,” he said when pushed on it again.

However, encouragingly for Saints fans, Pochettino is planning for the future anyway.

“Of course, because that’s my responsibility as a first team manager and of me and my staff,” he responded.

“I still have one more year on my contract and it’s my responsibility to look at the future and plan for the future."

When asked if agents of potential transfer targets, or his own players, ask about his position as they start to mull over their own futures, he commented: “I don’t really speak to any agents.

“The club already has a structure in place to deal with agents and speaking to agents. I don’t speak to agents.”

He continued: “What’s clear is that there are still five games left in the season and all players and staff are professional and under contract and we want to be professional about these last five games.

“The players are focussing on finishing the job as best as possible.”

Ffs do not let Poch go! I will be angry if the board don't tie him in on a new contract very quickly. The continued speculation over this is harmful and unsettling. It's not as if we are challenging for major honours or anything and need to focus 100% on that. The board must have their plans in place by now. If they haven't then what the hell have they been doing? Sort it Ffs.

If he went to Spurs it would be to a team that is not even the biggest in London, if he stays with us we are the biggest team south of the Thames, that is one hell of a catchment area that Freddie has to work on, so, sign Pooch to another 5 years, get extending the stadium, and do as Arsenal have done all over Kent, have football coaches training up the kids whilst spreading the word.
p.s. any traffic problems in and around Soton

We have now had 5 or 6 players with articles in the Echo all say they want him to stay.

And now we have Pochettino saying he wants to stay (in the PL)

However the SILENCE from RALPH & the BOARD IS DEAFENING !!!!!!.

What are they going to do with the £80m+ ?
Remember :-
- The last time we finished 8th in the PL we sold our up and coming left back (Wayne Bridge) for only £8m and went backwards and were relegated within a few years !.
- The last time we finished with a positive goal difference (in the top div) - 1988/89 we sold Alan Shearer for £3m and let Rod Wallace's contract run down. - Years of relegation battles followed !!!

The lessons are there, if you have a good Manager and good young players you KEEP THEM.

Tottenham"s approach to selecting a manager is like grabbing half a pound of pick 'n mix and seeing if anything's tasty. They haven't evolved with their current board and chairman at all. Worse, they continually interfere with player acquisitions etc. I just don't see someone with Poch's strong ethics being interested in a set up like that.

This article contains nothing new, D.E. - it's a good, solid cut and paste job, fuelling the speculation. MoPo's contract has a year to run - like any employee he can switch jobs and negotiate renewal of terms. As he's good in his role, he will be attractive to other employers - anything, as in life, could happen, although, thankfully, like most of us, he'll take the easy option, probably, and stay where he is. In all honesty, I don't see why MP can't just say that he wants to commit his future to the club, with the proviso that the board supports his ambition for the club.
This simple statement of intent, would stop, to a degree, the unsettled feelings amongst both fans and players.
Saying that he wants to stay in the Premier League, without committing to the Saints, is like sending his CV to the rest of the clubs, and is a smack in the face, to the fans.

P.S. Could do with signing a new Goalie instead of Sicknote Kelv and Rabbit in the Headlights Gazza - respect to them both.

Strengthen at CB for competition and strength in depth - respect to Jose and the improvement and job he has done this Season.

Play Sam and then we will know if we need a Loan Striker in the Summer with RICKIE and Adam.

Well said Costa Baz, I still think the Players know more than the Press and Supporters what the future is because they wouldn't commit with renewed Contracts eg Luke Shaw and others, they are very loyal to Mopo and he to them, Luke signed for 5 years this year, if he wasn't in on what lies beyond he's not dumb and wouldn't of committed himself.

Before the Jay injury the Players were like excited School Kids about MoPo and the future and so would I be if I was part of the spiral, what is annoying is all Saints Players and Supporters think about the future but without those wanted words I am a Saint for the next 10 years from MoPo it could also be exciting the Spurs Fans who should be more excited that Van Gaal is going to be there Manager if you believe Rudd Gullit.
What we all need is someone with a Physic brain who is sure MoPo is staying and we can all have long sleeps until the next season

i can see your point Baz but if MP was to say that he wants to commit his future to saints he is weakening his bargaining position. for all we know negotiations might be ongoing.
by saying he wants to stay in the prem MP might also be saying to the board I`m here and I want to stay here as long as the terms are good.
rumours start about every manager and player when their contracts have a year left to run, wenger and several arsenil players have been subject to this media speculation and even luke was subject to speculation prior to him signing his 5 year deal, he still is.
unless I hear that MP will leave the club I wont listen to any speculation or read anything into what either side has said.

This all seems a bit worrying. Why would Poch confidently commit his future to the premier league but not the Saints? Surely now would be the time to get him signed up? I think he is keeping his options open. Spurs unfortunately have the potential to be a top four club very soon. They play the right way and have a new ground being built as they already sell 35000 every single week. As much as I hate to say it, I think Poch would be thinking about it. I am worried because who would stop luke shaw going to real madrid? Who would stop Lallana going to Man u if Poch isn't there. I could be completely wrong and hope I am, but with Cortese going, I always had a feeling that Poch would see out the season and then go! The new board need to set out their vision instead of saying that they have been left with financial issues. It all sounds not great to me! I hope I am wrong!

I entirely agree. Perhaps Cortese was a bit greedy, but I think he also had Soutjhampton's progress at heart, if not for the sake of Markus. I hope this lot haven't got a Lowe mentality. All that work, only to see the team fragmented. It really would be so hard to take, seeing Lallana, Shaw, Schneiderlin and Rodriguez wearing the shirts of other teams. I sincerely believe that, if it happened, we would soon be on another downward spiral.

EVERY TIME YOU PUT A SAINTS SHIRT ON - IT MUST MEAN EVERYTHING - FANS AND PLAYERS ALIKE.

CONTINUE TO. DOMINATE AND 'CULL' ANY AWAY SUPPORTERS IN OUR HARD CORE AREAS. (We have done a good job with that this season)

AWAY SUPPORTERS are not a big issue. Wet Spam come down to Fight - Chelski need taking down a peg and Liverpool Supporters are being cleared out of our hard core areas. Overall we have been on TOP apart from Cup games where supporters are out of position and very little noise is generated.

OWN THE PUBS IN THE CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON. DON' T WORRY ABOUT THE OWNER - DOMINATE THE CHAPEL PUB.

RED ARMY PUBS FOR CARDIFF GAME - KING ALFRED - PRINCE OF WALES - NORTHAM CLUB - JOSHUA TREE - RED. LION - ROYAL OAK - BRIDGE AND CHAPEL.

HAVING THE EDGE IS EVERYTHING. WE TORE INTO JOHN TERRY AT CHELSEA AWAY LAST SEASON - WHICH GOT OUR STRIKERS IN FOR THE 2-0 FIGHTBACK.

WE TOOK IT TO STREETS - WE ARE THE 'MIGHTY SOUTHAMPTON.

WE FIGHT TO PROGRESS TO EUROPEAN FOOTBALL AND WEMBLEY APPEARANCE IN THE FA CUP YEAR ON YEAR.

WE ARE SOUTHAMPTON.

RED ARMY 2014. STRIKE- FIGHT- WIN.
WE HATE POMPEY.

TODAY - MAKE A DIFFERENCE
SPOT ON - WE WILL F...T IN THE STREETS AND FUBS, AND ON THE TERRACES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, AND OUR TEAM WILL FIGHT AND FIGHT TO ACHIEVE VICTORY, WE WILL NEVER SURRENDER.
ALL THOSE MINUS POINTS JINXED THE RESULT TODAY.

With all due respect, I was going uo and down the country following Saints with an estate car full of Saints fans before most of you guys were born.
I write from my soul and I will never do anything to harm the team that has been like a family to me for almost 45 years.
I like your enthusiasm Red Army, and I get the feeling that applies to a lot of people on thuis forum. However you have to be a bit realistic at times. It is all for a common goal - to make us a leading team in Europe.
When I saw the headline last night about Moyes and the "Saints swoop" for Lallana and Shaw I was really really angry and hurt.

Can't understand why Poch would even consider Spurs (not saying he is) . They are a long way from being in the same group as Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U and now Liverpool. So they will be in the same group as Everton and us and without an academy like ours, or players like ours, or a team spirit like ours.
