A BUS stop is being reviewed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC) after a councillor branded it "dangerous" for members of the public.

The Stagecoach bus stop in Longcross Lane, just right of the entrance to Hepplewhite Drive in Hatch Warren, will be investigated following Hatch Warren and Beggarwood ward councillor Dan Putty spoke of his concern of its layout.

The bus stop is built on a slope which Cllr Putty believes is a hazard for elderly and disabled residents who use the stop in the winter months.

He also feels that residents are unable to use the seating facilities at the bus stop as the bushes impede any views of the oncoming buses.

Cllr Putty told The Gazette: "There are quite a lot of elderly people who live here and they can't really use the bus stop because it is at a slant.

"The contractors who installed it have created a risk and they haven't looked at the risk factors at the bus stop.

"The overgrown hedges on the right of the bus stop means a bus driver won't see the resident looking to use the stop nor will someone sat in the shelter.

"Because of the slant, they can't lean out either as they could fall in the road in icy and cold weather."

He added: "I am greatly disappointed that this work wasn't carried out correctly. There is a massive safety issue here as it's dangerous."

The shelter was installed by BDBC.

Stagecoach buses 8, 86 and 86X pick up residents from the shelter and to take them to destinations such as Basingstoke Bus Station and Winchester.

It is the second time in recent weeks the council has been criticised for bus stops in Hatch Warren.

In October, The Gazette told of a council "blunder" that saw road markings for a bus stop painted on the wrong side of the road.

BDBC’s head of planning and infrastructure Matthew Evans said: "We have been made aware of the issues at the bus stop and we are investigating what can be done to resolve these."
