Objections to new vehicle access plans for Overton farm

First published in News

PLANS to create a new vehicle access to a farm have sparked objections from parish councillors.

A Mr and Mrs Oliver have asked for permission from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to create the new access at Pilgrims Farm, Overton.

The application is an amendment to a previous one submitted in December, which was refused because of concerns over visibility at the junction of the access.

But Overton parish councillors raised concerns that the new application still fails to address the issue of visibility.

Councillor Lucy Sloane Williams said: “We were unhappy last time with the level of visibility and the question is, do we feel that’s any better?”

Cllr Brian Langer said: “I just feel that there’s more that they could do to get over the sightline problem long-term.”

Councillors agreed to object to the plans on the grounds of poor visibility in both directions.

Does anything ever happen in Overton that the councillors actually like? What a miserable godforsaken place it sounds!

I believe (I expect to be corrected if I'm wrong!) that planning issues are decided at district level. The parish council can object all they like but at the end of the day it's not their decision. Perhaps they just feel like they need to express an opinion on everything in Overton to justify their existence. Any update on the peacocks? I've been on tenterhooks (whatever they are).

That’s certainly the impression created by recent news stories.

In fairness though, despite a scaremongering campaign by one resident, they did come out in support of ‘Carfest’.

Whenever a new idea is proposed someone always objects, that’s fine, but the problem is objectors often get far more attention and coverage than their numbers or the quality of their argument justifies. Councillors need to have the courage to see through all this.

Time and again we also see this in the Gazette; a headline plus several supporting paragraphs detailing an objection which ends with a tiny ‘right of reply’ type sentence that basically says ‘we organisers think it’s a good idea’. No wonder it’s so difficult to get things done.

And yes, I too wonder what happened to the Peacocks, perhaps they need a photo-op with Maria Miller?

I don't live in Overton but it is refreshing to see stories of elected people doing what they were actually elected for. Just saying.

Can't they put up one of those 'fish eye' mirrors so they can see before pulling out?

They weren't elected to object to everything. They were elected to represent the whole village. Are the peacocks represented on the parish council? I'd vote for one of them.
